Japanese Police and Lost Property Phrases

Japanese phrases for reporting lost property at a koban, describing items, filing a report, handling stolen cards, collecting belongings and calling police.

At a Japanese police box, say Ishitsutodoke o dashitai desu): “I lost my wallet and want to file a Lost Property Report.”

If the item disappeared inside a train, shop, airport or hotel, contact that facility first. Freeze cards and phone service separately; a police report does not do that for you.

Key takeaways

  • 交番 (koban) is a neighborhood police box.
  • 遺失届 is a Lost Property Report.
  • Contact the managed facility first when the location is known.
  • Give last time/place and unique identifying features.
  • Suspend bank cards, credit cards and phone service immediately.
  • Use 110 for an active crime or accident, not routine lost property.
  • Keep the report/reference information.
  • Confirm identity, pickup and shipping requirements before leaving Japan.

Call 110 for an active crime, immediate danger or accident. Tokyo Police says #9110 is for non-emergency consultation and that a koban can handle lost property and theft reports.

Questions about the report

Todokede no bangou o oshiete kudasai.

Kikokugo mo renraku o ukerareru you, meeru adoresu o touroku dekimasu ka.

The NPA asks overseas residents to provide a valid email/phone and a contact in Japan when possible.

Collecting found property

When contacted:

Otoshimono ga mitsukatta to iu renraku o ukemashita.

Hokan kigen wa itsu made desu ka.

Bring identity and report/contact details. Requirements differ by holding office and item.

Passport, residence card and travel deadlines

Identity documents require additional action beyond the lost-property report.

Pasupooto to zairyuu kaado ga saifu ni haitte imashita.

Saihakkou no tame, todokede o shoumei suru shorui wa moraemasu ka.
Can I receive a document proving the report for reissuance?

Mikka-go ni kikoku yotei desu. Mitsukatta baai wa meeru demo renraku shite kudasai.

Contact the relevant embassy/consulate for a passport and the Immigration Services Agency for residence-card procedures through their official channels. The police report is evidence of loss, not a replacement identity document.

Keep copies of the report and record which cards were inside. Do not put full document numbers into public posts asking strangers for help.

Insurance and employer documentation

Travel insurers or employers may request proof, but police decide which documents they can issue.

Hoken gaisha ni teishutsu suru tame, todokedebi to juri bangou ga wakaru shorui ga hitsuyou desu.

Kaisha ni houkoku suru hitsuyou ga arimasu. Tounantodoke ka ishitsutodoke ka kakunin shite kudasai.

Do not ask police to describe an uncertain loss as theft solely for an insurance claim. Give facts, preserve receipts and let the insurer determine coverage under its policy.

If you found property

At a facility:

Kono saifu o tennai de hiroimashita.

On a street:

Michi de keitai denwa o hiroimashita. Todoketai desu.

The NPA says found property in a managed facility should be reported to the facility promptly; property found elsewhere should be taken to police or a koban. Legal rights and deadlines exist, but a finder can relinquish rights. Do not inspect private contents beyond what is necessary for safe handover.

Practice plan

  1. Describe one wallet in five details.
  2. Give a two-hour time range and travel route.
  3. Explain whether it was lost, left or possibly stolen.
  4. Ask for report number, contact method and collection requirements.

Practise a lost-wallet report, repeat it for a lost phone, and try a possible-theft scenario using fictional identifiers.

FAQ

How do I say I lost something in Japanese?
Say, '[item] o nakushimashita' (I lost [item]) or '[item] o otoshita kamo shiremasen' (I may have dropped [item]). Then give the last confirmed place, time, route, item color, brand and identifying features.
Where should I report lost property in Japan?
If it was lost inside a managed facility such as a train, shop or hotel, contact that facility first. If it was lost on a street or the location is unknown, file a Lost Property Report at a police station or koban.
Should I call 110 for a lost wallet?
Ordinary lost property is not normally a 110 emergency. Visit a koban or police station and contact card issuers immediately. Tokyo Police says 110 is for crimes and accidents; non-emergency consultation is available through #9110.
What information is needed for a Japanese lost property report?
Prepare item type, color, brand, model, contents, serial or card details where safe, last known date/time and place, route taken, name and a reachable Japanese contact. Police use these details to match recovered property.
What should I do if my bank card or phone is missing?
The National Police Agency says to contact the card issuer or mobile operator immediately to suspend the account or phone. Filing a police report does not itself freeze cards, payment apps, SIM service or device access.
Can a visitor collect found property after leaving Japan?
The NPA asks non-residents to provide a valid email or phone number and, if possible, a contact in Japan. Collection, identity proof, authorization and shipping depend on the police or facility holding the item, so confirm before departure.
