SSW Nursing Care Japanese Language Requirements

Understand SSW nursing-care Japanese requirements: JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4, the care Japanese test, skills test, retakes and exemptions.

SSW(i) nursing care normally requires three test components: JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4+, the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test, and the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test. The care-specific Japanese test is additional; N4 alone is not the full route.

Prometric currently lists 60 minutes/45 questions for skills and 30 minutes/15 questions for care Japanese, with a 45-day same-subject retake wait after failure.

Key takeaways

  • General Japanese: JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4+.
  • Care Japanese: separate Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test.
  • Skills: separate Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test.
  • Skills test has 45 questions in 60 minutes.
  • Care Japanese test has 15 questions in 30 minutes.
  • Failed same-subject retake wait is 45 days.
  • Relevant Technical Intern Training can create exemptions.
  • Passing tests does not guarantee SSW status.

Three examination components

The Immigration Services Agency nursing-care field page lists:

  1. Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test.
  2. JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 or higher.
  3. Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test.

This differs from most SSW(i) fields because nursing care has an additional specialist Japanese assessment.

The work includes assistance with bathing, eating and excretion according to the user's physical and mental condition, plus recreation and functional-training support.

Read specified skilled worker Japanese requirements and Japanese requirements for nursing jobs to distinguish care work from registered nursing.

General Japanese test

JFT-Basic A2.2

A2.2 begins at 200/250. A1 and A2.1 results do not meet the published SSW(i) level.

Use JFT-Basic passing scores, registration guide, and result guide.

JLPT N4 or higher

A valid N4, N3, N2 or N1 pass can satisfy the general test condition. N4 requires both 90 overall and sectional minimums.

Use the JLPT N4 guide, N3 guide, and JLPT score report guide.

Other tests

NAT-TEST, J.TEST or a school completion certificate does not automatically replace the named tests.

Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test

This specialist test is conducted in Japanese. Prometric currently lists:

  • 15 questions.
  • 30 minutes.
  • Computer-based delivery.

It checks Japanese used in care settings, not only general grammar. Study areas include:

  • Body and health condition.
  • Care actions.
  • User communication.
  • Care records and handover.
  • Safety and observation.

The specialist test remains required even after a candidate passes N4 or JFT-Basic, unless the candidate qualifies for the field-specific exemption.

Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test

Prometric currently lists:

  • 45 questions.
  • 60 minutes.
  • Multiple available languages for the skills test.
  • CBT delivery.

The test checks expertise and skills for care work. Official study texts are available from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Japan Association of Certified Care Workers.

The skills test being available in several languages does not remove the separate Japanese requirements.

Current study topics include:

  • Fundamentals of care.
  • Body mechanics and independence support.
  • Bathing, eating and toileting assistance.
  • Dementia and communication.
  • Safety and infection prevention.

Eligibility and current countries

Prometric's 2026 notice covers Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Japan.

The exam page states:

  • Candidate must generally be at least 17; Indonesian nationals at least 18.
  • Japanese nationals are not eligible.
  • A candidate cannot retake a subject already passed.
  • Test eligibility does not guarantee SSW residence approval.

Check country-specific identity and booking rules before paying.

Fees

Prometric's current combined listing shows country-specific fees for the nursing-care SSW evaluation tests. Examples:

Country Current fee shown
Japan JPY 2,000
Bangladesh BDT 1,600
India INR 1,416 gross
Indonesia IDR 220,000
Nepal USD 15
Vietnam VND 379,500

Confirm whether the booking and fee cover the intended skills or Japanese subject under the live portal. Do not rely on an old screenshot.

Retake and booking rules

Prometric says:

  • A passed subject cannot be taken again.
  • A failed subject cannot be retaken for 45 days starting the next day.
  • Taking the skills test in another language still counts as the same subject.
  • A pass obtained during an invalid early retake can be revoked.

The 2026 reservation notice also states:

  • Bookings can generally open 59 days before the test.
  • Scheduled appointments cannot be cancelled.
  • Date/location changes close three business days before the test, subject to seats and holiday rules.

Plan the general Japanese, care Japanese and skills results separately. One passed subject does not reserve or extend the others.

Technical Intern Training exemptions

The official nursing-care field notes distinguish prior training:

  • Successful relevant nursing-care Technical Intern Training (ii) can exempt field skills and language requirements under the route.
  • Successful training in another job category can exempt the general Japanese test, but the candidate still needs the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test.

Verify completion records and field matching. Do not infer exemption from work experience without official documentation.

After passing

  1. Find an eligible nursing-care employer.
  2. Pass the employer interview and care scenario.
  3. Review written duties, wage, shifts and location.
  4. Gather general Japanese, specialist Japanese and skills evidence.
  5. Confirm any exemption evidence.
  6. Prepare applicant and company documents.
  7. Apply for Certificate of Eligibility or change of status.

The employer or registered support organization should explain required support in a language the worker understands.

Practical care Japanese beyond the tests

N4/A2.2 is a legal test floor. Daily care can demand stronger ability for:

  • Explaining each care action.
  • Recognizing pain or distress.
  • Communicating with dementia users.
  • Reporting falls or condition changes.
  • Speaking with families.
  • Writing handover notes.

Use Japanese conversation at work, Japanese customer-service phrases, and Japanese phone-call phrases.

Preparation plan

General Japanese

  • JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4 official materials.
  • Daily listening and reading.

Care vocabulary

Care scenarios

Interview and handover

  • Motivation and experience.
  • Safety example.
  • Structured handover.

Use Japanese job-interview self-introduction.

Privacy and safety

Never place real care-user names, diagnoses, addresses or records into public language tools. Use fictional cases. In employment, follow facility policy and Japanese privacy requirements.

Closed-loop communication is essential: repeat critical instructions, confirm identity and report uncertainty. A memorized polite phrase cannot replace correct understanding.

Result records and name matching

The three examination components can produce separate result records. Keep the original Prometric ID and use identity details that match the passport or accepted document. Check name, birth date, exam subject and result before sending anything to an employer. If a record is wrong, request correction through the organizer instead of editing the file. Save official notifications securely because a social-media result list or screenshot may not satisfy Immigration. Review the JFT-Basic test guide for the general language document and keep it separate from both nursing-care evaluation subjects.

Common mistakes

Mistake Correction
"N4 alone completes the route" Add care Japanese and skills tests
Confusing nurse and care worker Their licences and routes differ
Retaking within 45 days Follow same-subject waiting rule
Changing skill-test language to evade wait It remains the same subject
Assuming training exemption Verify field and completion records
Passing tests means approval Employer and immigration steps remain

Practice Japanese speaking free before care interviews.

Final SSW nursing-care checklist

  • Pass JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4+, unless exempt.
  • Pass Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test, unless exempt.
  • Pass Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test, unless exempt.
  • Respect the 45-day failed-subject retake wait.
  • Verify age, nationality and identity rules.
  • Use official MHLW study text.
  • Find an eligible employer.
  • Review shifts, duties and support.
  • Protect user information.
  • Never assume tests guarantee status.

How we researched

We checked the Immigration Services Agency nursing-care field and SSW process pages, Prometric's current nursing-care test listing, 2026 reservation notice, fee table and MHLW study materials on 22 October 2026.

This article owns the exact SSW care-test intent; the nursing-jobs article separately distinguishes registered nursing and practical workplace levels.

FAQ

What Japanese tests are required for SSW nursing care?
The route generally requires JFT-Basic A2.2 or JLPT N4 or higher, plus the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test. Candidates also need the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test unless an applicable Technical Intern Training exemption is documented.
Is JLPT N4 alone enough for SSW nursing care?
No. N4 can satisfy the general Japanese component, but nursing care uniquely adds the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test. The field skills test, employer contract, required documents and immigration approval also remain part of the pathway.
How long are the nursing-care SSW tests?
Prometric currently lists 60 minutes and 45 questions for the Nursing Care Skills Evaluation Test and 30 minutes and 15 questions for the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test. Administration tasks can be included in the appointment time.
When can I retake a failed nursing-care test?
Prometric states that a failed candidate cannot take the same subject again for 45 days starting the day after the examination. Retaking under another language still counts as the same skills subject, and a pass obtained during the restricted period can be revoked.
Can Technical Intern Training exempt the nursing-care tests?
Successful nursing-care Technical Intern Training (ii) can create skills and language exemptions under the official route. If the completed training was in another field, the candidate may still need the Nursing Care Japanese Language Evaluation Test. Verify the exact documents.
