JFT-Basic result timeline
| Time | Result action |
|---|---|
| End of the CBT | Total score and assessment result appear on screen |
| Within 5 business days | Official notification is issued in the Prometric registration website |
| During 5-year storage period | Candidate can sign in, view and print the notification |
| After 5 years | Online viewing is no longer promised; keep your printed copy |
Business days follow the Prometric calendar, not simply five calendar days. Weekends, Japanese public holidays and the New Year period can extend the wait.
Read the JFT-Basic registration guide before testing and JFT-Basic passing scores for the current three-band system.
The immediate score screen
After the final section, the computer displays:
- Total scaled score.
- Assessed result, such as A1, A2.1 or A2.2.
Read the screen carefully. If test information or candidate information appears wrong, tell the proctor according to the test-center process.
The screen is early notification, not a substitute for the official document required by an application. Do not rely on memory or an unauthorized phone photo inside a secure test area.
The total is calculated by statistical equating, not by adding one point per correct answer. Practice percentages cannot predict an exact scaled score.
The official notification within five business days
Sign in to the same Prometric registration account used for the appointment. Open the result area and select the relevant JFT-Basic test.
The formal notification includes:
- Examinee information.
- Examination information.
- Total score from 10 to 250.
- Assessment result.
- Correct-answer percentage for each section as a reference.
- A second page explaining the level framework.
Verify name, passport or identity details, date and score before submitting it anywhere. If account information is wrong, contact Prometric rather than editing the document.
How to read the result
| Total score | Displayed assessment |
|---|---|
| 200-250 | A2.2 (A2) |
| 175-199 | A2.1 |
| 145-174 | A1 |
| 10-144 | * |
There are no separate section pass marks. A reached level comes from the total across Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension.
The section percentages still matter for learning:
| Weak section | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Script and Vocabulary | Review kana, kanji and frequent daily-life words |
| Conversation and Expression | Study functional phrases, relationships and context |
| Listening | Add segmentation, shadowing and situational inference |
| Reading | Practice notices, messages, forms and time limits |

What A1, A2.1 and A2.2 can support
The Japan Foundation FAQ currently states:
- A1: can support Employment for Skill Development and Student status for enrollment in a Japanese-language educational institution.
- A2.1: mainly used for voluntary employer-change applications under Employment for Skill Development.
- A2.2: can support Specified Skilled Worker (i).
These are language-evidence uses, not approval guarantees. Other requirements remain, and some SSW fields can require higher Japanese proficiency.
Read specified skilled worker Japanese requirements, Japanese language school requirements, and Japanese tests other than JLPT.
How to print the notification
Prometric recommends a PC and supported desktop browser. For Google Chrome:
- Open the result notification.
- Click the print action at the top.
- Choose A4 paper.
- Enable background graphics or background printing.
- Review every page in print preview.
- Print or use a secure local PDF destination if available.
Background printing matters because visual elements can be omitted otherwise. Check that the candidate data, score, assessment and second-page explanation are complete.
Create at least two secure copies:
- Printed original-quality copy.
- Encrypted or access-controlled local PDF produced through printing, if the browser allows it.
Do not upload an unredacted result to public cloud folders or social media.
Printing problems
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Layout missing color/background | Enable background graphics |
| Document cut off | Select A4 and default or fit scale |
| Mobile print is incomplete | Use desktop Chrome or Firefox |
| Result does not appear | Confirm five business days have passed, then contact Prometric |
| Wrong personal information | Contact support; never edit the document |
| Cannot access old result | Use the saved printed copy and ask the receiving body what it accepts |
Prometric specifically warns that future login access may become unavailable. Do not postpone printing until an application deadline years later.
Validity, storage and authenticity
The JFT-Basic result itself has no expiration date according to the Japan Foundation FAQ. Online result data is stored for five years.
These are different concepts:
- Provider validity: no expiry.
- Portal availability: five-year display period.
- Recipient policy: the employer, school or authority can require a recent result.
For authenticity inquiries made for appropriate reasons, the Japan Foundation can respond to government bodies, educational institutions, corporations and other organizations. The detailed verification route should be requested from the Foundation in Japanese or English.
Never alter a score PDF, crop away identifying context or create an unofficial translation that looks like the original.
Results issued before August 2026
Until July 2026, JFT-Basic assessed only A2.2 at 200 or more. The official FAQ says those 200+ notifications remain usable as A2.2 evidence after the scoring update.
Older notifications do not retroactively award A1 or A2.1. A candidate needing proof of those newer bands should take JFT-Basic from August 2026 onward.
This date distinction prevents a common error: reading an old notification through the new 145 and 175 thresholds.

What to do after the result
If you reached the required level
Print the official notification, confirm the receiving route and submit only the required document. Continue preparing for field skills, interviews and workplace communication.
Use Japanese conversation at work, Japanese job-interview self-introduction, and Japanese customer-service phrases.
If you did not reach the level
Use the section percentages:
- Record total and target gap.
- Rank the four sections.
- Choose the weakest Can-do category.
- Study with the appropriate Irodori level.
- Complete weekly timed practice.
- Recheck booking and change rules for the next window.
Do not infer a precise number of extra correct answers needed because the score is scaled.
If the recipient rejects the document
Ask whether the problem is test acceptance, score threshold, recency, print quality or verification. Do not retake until you know which issue must change.
The JPT Japanese test guide, J.TEST registration guide, and JLPT levels explained cover alternatives, but acceptance must be confirmed first.
Speaking after JFT-Basic
Conversation and Expression is selected-response; it is not a live speaking interview. A2.2 evidence does not prove that the candidate can handle an unexpected customer or supervisor response.
Use Japanese speaking practice with AI, speaking Japanese alone, and Japanese phone-call phrases.
Start a free Japanese speaking session and perform the everyday Can-do tasks represented by the result.
Common result mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Treating screen result as final document | Print the official notification after issuance |
| Waiting beyond five years to save it | Print while portal data is stored |
| Calling section percentages pass marks | Only the total determines the level |
| Reading an old test with new bands | Pre-August results assessed only A2.2 |
| Assuming no provider expiry means every recipient accepts it | Ask about recency |
| Editing the PDF to fix a name | Contact Prometric |
| Claiming speaking proof | Add direct speaking evidence |
Practice Japanese conversation free while handling the document and preparing the next application stage.

How we researched
We checked the Japan Foundation's current JFT-Basic overview and FAQ, Prometric's printing instructions, result-validity FAQ and official test-process page on 22 October 2026.
We distinguish immediate screen feedback, the official notification, provider validity, portal storage and recipient-specific recency. Route acceptance remains controlled by the relevant authority or institution.
