JPT Japanese Test Guide: Format, Scores and Uses
Understand the JPT Japanese test format, 10-990 score, 2026 dates, fees, result timing and recognized uses before registering.
The JPT is a 200-question Japanese listening-and-reading test that reports a continuous score from 10 to 990. It is normally offered twelve times per year in Japan, costs 7,700 yen for the listed 2026 Japan rounds, and publishes results about two weeks after the test.
JPT is useful when a school, company, or specified procedure accepts its score and when a learner wants repeated measurement on one scale. It is not a speaking interview, and its provider's comparison with JLPT levels should be treated as a reference rather than universal conversion.
Key takeaways
- JPT has 100 listening and 100 reading questions.
- Listening and reading each score from 5 to 495, producing a 10-990 total in five-point increments.
- There is no universal pass/fail score; the required score comes from the receiving organization or procedure.
- Japan normally has twelve JPT rounds per year, with cities varying by round.
- The official result is normally available around two weeks after testing.
- Published reference points include 315, 370, 375, 430, 525 and 660 for different comparison or official-use contexts.

What the JPT measures
The JPT Japan Executive Committee describes the test as an objective measure of Japanese communication skills needed for enrollment and employment. Unlike the JLPT, candidates do not choose a pre-labeled level. Everyone taking the standard JPT receives a score on the same broad scale.
That design has two practical advantages. First, a learner can retest and measure smaller changes than a five-level pass/fail ladder shows. Second, a company can define its own score target for a role. The limitation is that a raw score means little until the receiving organization states how it uses it.
JPT covers receptive communication: hearing Japanese and interpreting written Japanese. It does not observe the candidate producing speech. Anyone preparing for an interview should combine test study with Japanese job-interview self-introduction, Japanese conversation at work, and business Japanese conversation practice.
For alternative certificates, compare Japanese tests other than JLPT, J.TEST vs JPT, BJT business Japanese, and JFT-Basic 2026.
JPT test format
The standard JPT contains 200 four-choice questions split evenly between listening and reading. Official explanatory material compares its structure with a TOEIC-style listening-and-reading assessment.
The listening side tests practical comprehension through picture description, listening-reading items, responses, and conversations or explanations. The reading side tests vocabulary, sentence completion, error correction, and passages.
| Area | Questions | Score range | Main abilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 100 | 5-495 | Fast comprehension, responses, conversations and explanations |
| Reading | 100 | 5-495 | Vocabulary, grammar, sentence accuracy and passage comprehension |
| Total | 200 | 10-990 | Combined communication-oriented receptive proficiency |
The test requires quick decisions across many questions. Memorizing isolated vocabulary without timed listening and reading practice is insufficient. Learners should train accuracy and pace together.
The word "communication" can mislead candidates into expecting a speaking component. JPT uses communication situations, but the response remains selected rather than spoken. Start a free Japanese speaking session and answer listening prompts aloud after choosing the test answer.
How JPT scoring works
JPT listening and reading scores each begin at 5 and reach 495. The total begins at 10 and reaches 990. Scores move in five-point increments. There is no universal pass/fail mark on the standard test.
The official comparison page presents reference points of 315 around N5, 375 around N4, 430 around N3, 525 around N2, and 660 around N1. These are not exact conversions. The provider explains that people who passed the same JLPT level can be distributed across a broad JPT score range.
A separate official score-description page explains what different bands suggest a learner can understand or do. Use that description for study planning, then use the actual school, employer, or government requirement for decisions.
For JLPT context, see JLPT levels explained, the JLPT N5 guide, JLPT dates 2026, and why the JLPT does not test speaking.
Recognized uses and important thresholds
A JPT score can matter for Japanese-language-school admission, some higher-education applications, and company benchmarking, but the required score varies.
The Immigration Services Agency page for people considering a Japanese language education institution lists JPT 315 or higher as one route showing A1-or-higher Japanese proficiency. The official list for A2-or-higher evidence includes JPT 370 or higher in the referenced education context.
The JPT provider publishes examples of schools and companies using JPT scores, while telling candidates to check current institution guidance. Higher education can use different thresholds: an Immigration Services Agency page discussing Japanese ability for higher-education admission lists JPT 525 or higher among its examples.
Never reduce this to "315 gets a student visa" or "525 guarantees university admission." A score is one piece of evidence. The institution and authority evaluate the route, documents, and current rules.

2026 and early 2027 Japan dates
JPT is normally held monthly in Japan, but test cities vary. The current official schedule lists these late-2026 rounds:
| Round | Test date | Japan locations | Application period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 415 | 18 October 2026 | Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, Fukuoka | 18 August-18 September |
| 416 | 22 November 2026 | Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi | 18 September-22 October |
| 417 | 20 December 2026 | Tokyo, Osaka | 20 October-20 November |
| 418 | 24 January 2027 | Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi | 24 November-24 December |
As of 22 October, Round 416 has reached its stated application deadline. A later reader should not assume it remains available. Reopen the official Japan registration page and verify live status.
Overseas frequency differs. The official overseas page lists local hosts and dates in South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwan, Myanmar, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Cambodia and other locations. Some offer monthly testing; others list fewer rounds.
Do not book travel from a copied calendar. Confirm local registration, venue, fee, payment, identification, result process, and cancellation warning with the official host.
Registration, fee and result process
Japan candidates use the official JPT app. Published steps include creating an account, selecting the examination date and prefecture, registering a photo, and paying by an available method. The photo is used on the score document and cannot simply be changed after application, so follow the official image requirements.
The listed fee for the 2026 Japan rounds is 7,700 yen including tax. The site says the fee is not refunded once paid. Overseas host fees and payment methods differ.
Japan candidates receive notices through the app and email before the test. The app provides test registration, score viewing, and Official Score Certificate requests. The official result announcement is around two weeks after the exam.
An Official Score Certificate can be requested through the app from the result screen. The provider uses a two-dimensional-code authentication system so a recipient can check the certificate. Protect that code and personal score data rather than posting an unredacted image.
Use this checklist:
- Confirm the score accepted for your purpose.
- Select a reachable round and city.
- Check the application cutoff.
- Prepare a compliant identity photo.
- Use an email that receives JPT messages.
- Pay only through the official route.
- Check the app for the notice and result.
- Request the Official Score Certificate if required.
Who should take the JPT?
JPT fits learners who want frequent scoring on one scale. It can be useful when an employer tracks progress, a school names a JPT score, or an application deadline cannot wait for the next JLPT cycle.
It may not fit when the receiving body accepts only another named test, when the candidate needs a speaking assessment, when the country has no reachable date, or when a residence route specifically names JFT-Basic or a field skill examination.
| Goal | Check first |
|---|---|
| Japanese-language-school A1 evidence | Whether JPT 315 is accepted for the exact intake |
| A2 evidence in a named route | Whether JPT 370 is listed in the current rule |
| Higher-education application | Program guideline and any JPT 525 requirement |
| Company benchmarking | Employer's internal target and certificate format |
| SSW application | Official field rule; often JFT-Basic/JLPT route |
| Speaking-heavy job | Interview and speaking practice in addition to any score |
Compare JPT with J.TEST, JLPT with JFT-Basic, J.TEST with JFT-Basic, and JLPT alternatives before deciding.
How to prepare for JPT
Start with official samples to learn the pace. Record listening and reading separately because the same total can hide different weaknesses.
A practical eight-week plan:
- Take a timed baseline and record both section estimates.
- Build high-frequency vocabulary and kanji from errors.
- Drill quick response and conversation listening daily.
- Practice sentence completion and error correction under time pressure.
- Read notices, messages, workplace texts, and longer passages.
- Retest one section every week.
- Complete full simulations during the final two weeks.
- Keep sleep, travel, identification, and app notices in the test-day plan.
Use Japanese shadowing practice, daily Japanese study routine, and how to learn grammar fast to support the test track.
Then add output. Summarize a passage, answer a listening question without choices, or explain a correction aloud. Practice Japanese speaking free so the listening-and-reading score does not become a substitute for conversation.
What JPT cannot prove by itself
A 990-point scale looks precise, but precision does not expand the skills observed. JPT does not ask the candidate to negotiate, repair a misunderstanding, answer a follow-up question, or adjust politeness in real time.
For practical readiness, combine the score with Japanese phone-call phrases, Japanese meeting phrases, Japanese customer-service phrases, and Japanese small-talk topics.
A useful daily routine is one test drill followed by one live response. Start a free SoraSpeak conversation, reuse the vocabulary from the drill, and ask the teacher to change the situation unexpectedly. That trains the gap between selecting an answer and producing one.
Final decision checklist
- Write the exact reason you need a test.
- Ask the receiving body which tests and documents it accepts.
- Compare reachable dates in your country.
- Match your JPT target to the written requirement.
- Include registration, travel, result, and certificate timing.
- Check the current fee and refund rule.
- Try official sample questions.
- Protect personal data in the app and certificate.
- Book before cutoff pressure.
- Keep speaking practice running beside exam study.
If JPT is accepted, its frequency and continuous score are powerful advantages. Try a free Japanese conversation while you prepare so the certificate goal supports, rather than replaces, real communication.
How we researched
We checked the official JPT test-content, score-description, registration, Japan schedule, overseas-location, certificate, JLPT-comparison, and school/company-use pages on 22 October 2026. We also checked Immigration Services Agency pages naming JPT 315 for A1 evidence in Japanese-language-school admission and JPT 370 in the published A2 evidence list.
We distinguish provider comparisons from binding application rules. We do not claim a score guarantees residence status, admission, employment, or equivalence. The receiving organization and current government procedure remain authoritative.
