Japanese University Interview Questions and Answers

Japanese university interview questions with frameworks for motivation, major choice, academic evidence, research, language, finances and online interviews.

A strong Japanese university interview answer begins with fit: 貴学を志望する理由は、〇〇を〇〇の方法で学べるからです — “I am applying because your university lets me study X through Y.”

Do not treat online question lists as official. Each school and program sets its own screening, language, technical questions and equipment rules.

Key takeaways

  • Read the exact current program guideline.
  • Make every answer consistent with submitted documents.
  • Explain university fit with specific curriculum evidence.
  • Support strengths with projects, grades or outcomes.
  • Prepare technical explanations when the program assesses knowledge.
  • State Japanese/English ability honestly.
  • Explain finances and adaptation realistically when asked.
  • Test online interview equipment exactly as instructed.

What official sources say

Study in Japan says admission methods vary by school and can include:

  • Application-document evaluation.
  • Academic knowledge tests.
  • EJU.
  • Interviews.
  • Language certificates and translations.

Some interviews are online or held outside Japan; others require travel to Japan.

Examples show the variation:

Program example Official interview description
Kyoto University international civil engineering Online interview evaluates essay, aptitude and mathematics/physics knowledge
UTokyo College of Design Route B 2027 Approx. 30-minute individual online interview in English; two cameras required
UTokyo College of Design Route A 2027 Full-day in-person screening including interview, in English and Japanese
UTokyo graduate international program example Faculty panel including potential supervisor, online interview after document screening

These examples are not universal templates. Use your program's current guideline.

Self-introduction

Question:

Jikoshoukai o shite kudasai.

Framework:

  1. Current school and focus.
  2. One relevant project/result.
  3. Intended major.
  4. Reason for this interview.

Sample:

Do not spend the answer listing hobbies unrelated to the application.

Why this university and major

Questions:

Naze hongaku o shibou shimashita ka.

Naze kono gakubu/senkou o erabimashita ka.

Strong fit includes:

  • Named course or curriculum structure.
  • Faculty/project relevant to your goal.
  • Lab, studio, fieldwork or industry collaboration.
  • Teaching language and pedagogy.
  • How the resource changes your capability.

Sample:

Weak answer: rankings, anime or Tokyo alone. Personal interest can begin the story but must lead to academic fit.

Comparing other universities

Hoka no daigaku dewa naku, hongaku de aru hitsuyou wa nan desu ka.

Answer without attacking competitors:

If applying elsewhere, answer honestly. Admissions teams know applicants compare programs.

Academic preparation and technical questions

Questions:

Use evidence:

Technical answer process:

  1. Restate the problem.
  2. State assumptions.
  3. Choose method/formula.
  4. Work step by step.
  5. Check units and reasonableness.
  6. Correct openly if needed.

Phrase:

Mazu jouken o seiri shi, tsugi ni tsukau shiki o setsumei shimasu.

Discussing grades, gaps and failure

Use context, responsibility and later evidence. Do not blame a teacher.

Failure:

Consistency with application documents

Panels may quote your statement, essay, transcript or recommendation.

Shibou riyuusho de wa [goal] to kaite imasu ga, gutaiteki ni dou jitsugen shimasu ka.

Teishutsu shita katsudou jisseki no naka de, anata jishin ga tantou shita bubun wa nan desu ka.

Suisenjou ni kakareta tsuyomi o shimesu betsu no rei wa arimasu ka.

Before the interview, create one evidence sheet:

Application claim Evidence What you personally did Limitation/learning
Leadership Project result Planned sprints and resolved conflict Initial schedule slipped
Academic strength Grade/project Designed and tested model Small sample
Community contribution Event/output Recruited and trained volunteers Limited follow-up
Language ability Official score/work sample Presented and answered questions Technical vocabulary gap

Do not add a new impressive claim that contradicts the file. If circumstances changed, state the date and reason transparently.

Questions for undergraduate applicants

What would you contribute?

Hongaku no gakusei komyuniti ni, dono you ni kouken dekimasu ka.

Answer with an existing skill and realistic action:

What books or topics matter?

Summarize the idea, your analysis and one unresolved question. Do not name a book you cannot discuss.

How will you handle difficulty?

Specific help-seeking is stronger than saying you will simply work harder.

Questions for graduate applicants

Beyond the research-plan summary, prepare:

Use a compact feasibility table:

Phase Output Risk Fallback
Literature/design Research protocol Scope too broad Narrow question
Data Approved dataset Access delay Public/simulated data
Analysis Validated result Model failure Baseline method
Dissemination Thesis/paper/tool Time shortage Prioritized core output

Do not promise data access or supervisor approval without evidence.

A practice scoring rubric

This is not an official admissions rubric. Use it to review recordings:

Dimension Strong answer
Directness Answers in first sentence
Specificity Names course, evidence or method
Consistency Matches submitted documents
Academic readiness Shows relevant knowledge/process
Reflection Owns weakness and improvement
Fit Explains why this program changes capability
Communication Clear, concise and responsive
Integrity Admits uncertainty and avoids fabrication

Score each from one to five, then rewrite only the weakest two dimensions. A polished accent cannot compensate for missing evidence.

Study and career plan

Questions:

Nyuugakugo, nani o manabitai desu ka.

Sotsugyougo no keikaku wa nan desu ka.

Strong plan:

  • Foundation courses.
  • Specialization/project.
  • Research/internship.
  • Output or contribution.
  • Career mechanism.

Sample:

Avoid one fixed job promise when many steps are uncertain; show direction and decision criteria.

Research questions for graduate applicants

Graduate interviews can ask:

Use problem, gap, question, method, validation and fallback. See MEXT scholarship interview questions for a full research-plan defense framework.

Language, finance and adaptation

Language:

Answer with actual score/evidence and support plan:

Do not claim an unearned score. Use JLPT N2 guide or JLPT N1 guide for preparation.

Finance:

Gakuhi to seikatsuhi o dono you ni junbi shimasu ka.

Give truthful funding source, contingency and scholarship status. Do not present unconfirmed part-time income as guaranteed funding.

Adaptation:

Mention university support, communication, health, time management and asking early—not stereotypes about adapting easily.

Ethics and integrity questions

Answer from policy and verification:

Do not guess the university's exact AI policy; say you will follow the current rule.

Online interview setup

Official programs can specify unusual requirements. UTokyo College of Design Route B currently requires two cameras and prohibits smartphones/tablets as cameras for that interview.

Confirm:

  • Time zone and assigned time.
  • Required platform and account name.
  • Camera count and room view.
  • ID check.
  • Microphone and bandwidth.
  • Paper/calculator/material rules.
  • Backup contact.
  • Recording prohibition.

Useful phrase:

Onsei ga togiremashita. Saigo no shitsumon o mou ichido onegai dekimasu ka.

Test the exact equipment, not only Zoom with a friend.

Sample university interview

Panel:
Panel:
Panel:
Panel:

Clarification and correction phrases

Accurate correction is stronger than pretending certainty.

Practice plan

  1. Prepare 30-, 60- and 120-second self-introductions.
  2. Answer why this university and major with three specific facts.
  3. Defend one project or research plan.
  4. Practise grades, failure, language, finance and ethics.
  5. Run technical questions and interruptions.
  6. Rehearse on the required online setup.

Practise a Japanese university interview, repeat a major-choice follow-up, and try an online technical interview with truthful application details.

Build supporting skills with Japanese speaking practice with AI, how to practice speaking Japanese alone, Japanese shadowing practice, Japanese interview keigo phrases, and a 30-minute Japanese study routine.

Final checklist

Confirm:

  • Exact program guideline and interview language.
  • University/major fit evidence.
  • Academic strengths and gaps.
  • Project/research details.
  • Study and career plan.
  • Language proof and support plan.
  • Finance and adaptation plan.
  • Ethics and policy awareness.
  • Online equipment and time zone.

End with:

FAQ

Are Japanese university interviews conducted in Japanese?
It depends entirely on the program. Japanese-taught admissions may evaluate Japanese communication, while English-taught programs can interview in English. Some routes use both languages. Follow the current application guideline, not the university's general website.
What do Japanese university interviewers ask?
Common themes include why this university and major, academic preparation, study plan, career goals, language ability, adaptation, finances and questions arising from submitted documents. Technical programs may test subject knowledge during the interview.
How long should a university interview answer be?
Give a direct answer first, then one or two evidence points. Prepare 30-, 60- and 120-second versions. Stop after answering the question so the panel can probe; a long memorized speech can hide weak listening.
Can I use the same answer for every Japanese university?
No. Your academic story can remain consistent, but university fit must use the actual curriculum, faculty, facilities, pedagogy and opportunities in that program. Generic prestige or city-life answers do not show informed fit.
Will an interview test mathematics or other subjects?
Some do. Kyoto University's international civil-engineering selection, for example, evaluates aptitude through an essay and mathematics/physics knowledge in an online interview. Read your program's official screening method and practise explaining solutions aloud.
Does a good interview guarantee admission?
No. Universities can use holistic document review, academic tests, EJU, language scores, essays and interviews in different combinations. Conditional offers can also depend on final grades or documents. Only the admissions office's formal result controls.
