MEXT Scholarship Interview Questions in Japanese
MEXT scholarship interview questions in Japanese with frameworks for purpose, research plans, university choice, language, contribution and ethics.
A strong MEXT interview answer in Japanese connects purpose, evidence and Japan-specific fit:
Do not present guessed questions as an official list. The diplomatic mission and scholarship category control the actual process.
Key takeaways
- Read the current guideline for your category and country.
- Explain a specific purpose for studying in Japan.
- Show that you researched universities and supervisors.
- Connect method, feasibility and expected contribution.
- Prepare Japanese and English versions where relevant.
- Answer ethical, safety, data and contingency questions.
- Do not exaggerate publications, language ability or contact.
- Passing first screening is not final selection.
In this guide: criteria | introduction | purpose | research | university | language | scripts | practice
What the official guidelines say
The 2027 MEXT research-student guidelines state that the interview must show:
- A clear sense of purpose related to study in Japan.
- Information gathered about Japanese universities.
- Sufficient Japanese or English ability to communicate with an academic adviser.
- Considerable Japanese proficiency when the desired field requires advanced Japanese.
The Study in Japan official site explains two main routes: embassy recommendation and university recommendation. Requirements, timing and available categories vary.
Always use the latest guideline and diplomatic-mission page. Do not send documents directly to MEXT when the route instructs submission through the embassy/consulate.
Embassy recommendation versus university recommendation
The official Study in Japan site describes two routes, but they do not use identical local screening.
| Area | Embassy recommendation | University recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Initial contact | Japanese embassy/consulate in applicant's country | Eligible Japanese university/program |
| Screening owner | Diplomatic mission conducts initial screening | University screens and recommends candidates |
| Categories | Availability varies by country and category | Only eligible categories/approved quota |
| Interview | Conducted under diplomatic-mission process | University process varies |
| Documents/deadline | Mission's current notice controls | University notice controls |
| Final MEXT decision | Required | Required |
Useful clarification:
Watashi wa taishikan suisen de oubo shite imasu. Kono mensetsu wa daiichiji senkou no ichibu to iu rikai de yoroshii desu ka.
Do not combine advice from another category or country without checking the applicable notice.
Evaluation matrix for practice
Use this non-official preparation matrix to test answer quality:
| Dimension | Strong evidence | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Specific problem and beneficiary | Generic desire to live in Japan |
| Japan fit | Named method, lab or resource | Prestige-only answer |
| Research | Question, method, validation | Topic without executable plan |
| Feasibility | Timeline, access and fallback | Assumes perfect conditions |
| University fit | Specific faculty/project evidence | Professor name without research knowledge |
| Language | Honest evidence and improvement plan | Unsupported fluency claim |
| Contribution | Mechanism and timeline after study | Vague promise to help society |
| Integrity | Limits and unknowns acknowledged | Invented achievements/contact |
This is not MEXT's scoring sheet. It is a rehearsal tool derived from the published interview purpose.
Document consistency questions
Panels can compare spoken answers with the application, research plan, transcript and recommendation.
Shinseisho de wa [A] to kaite imasu ga, genzai mo onaji keikaku desu ka.
If the plan evolved:
Grades:
Answer with context, responsibility and later evidence. Do not blame instructors or invent illness.
Gap:
Give dates and relevant activity. If activity was unrelated, explain honestly what skill or decision emerged.
Undergraduate and non-research categories
Not every MEXT interview is a research proposal defense. Undergraduate and specialized categories can emphasize:
- Chosen field and academic preparation.
- Why Japan and the expected degree route.
- Subject-test readiness.
- Japanese-language training willingness.
- Adaptation and independent living.
- Long-term contribution.
Example:
Naze kono senkou o erabimashita ka.
Answer with current routine, measurable target and use of formal instruction. Use only the guideline for your category; research-student requirements should not be copied wholesale into an undergraduate answer.
Panel follow-up techniques
Use a three-step response:
- Answer directly in the first sentence.
- Give one or two evidence points.
- Stop and allow follow-up.
Clarify:
Shitsumon no ito o kakunin shite mo yoroshii deshou ka.
Correct yourself:
Sakihodo no kaitou o teisei shimasu. Seikaku ni wa [fact] desu.
Unknown:
A transparent correction is stronger than defending an obvious mistake.
Self-introduction
Question:
Jikoshoukai o shite kudasai.
Framework:
- Current academic/professional position.
- Field and one result.
- Proposed study topic.
- Purpose in Japan.
Sample:
Keep the first answer under one minute unless asked for detail.
Why Japan and why MEXT
Questions:
Naze Nihon de kenkyuu shitai no desu ka.
Naze Monbukagakushou shougakukin ga hitsuyou desu ka.
Strong answer components:
- Specific Japanese research strength.
- Named lab, method, facility or dataset.
- Match to the problem.
- Contribution after study.
- Financial answer without making money the academic purpose.
Sample:
Avoid: Japan is advanced without evidence.

Use actual evidence and avoid claiming a JLPT level not earned; say 相当 only with a transparent basis.
See JLPT N3 guide, JLPT N2 guide, and Japanese speaking practice with AI.
Contribution and career plan
Questions:
Kenkyuu seika o dono you ni katsuyou shimasu ka.
Kikokugo no keikaku wa nan desu ka.
Nihon to no kankei o dou keizoku shimasu ka.
Strong answer names beneficiary, mechanism and timeline:
Do not promise national transformation without an implementation path.
Difficult interview questions
Respect local capacity; explain missing fit rather than insulting institutions.
Name risks, detection point and fallback.
Answer honestly and explain decision criteria.
Use evidence, acknowledge complexity and avoid stereotypes.
Connect preparation, feasibility, collaboration and contribution—not entitlement.

Panel:
Panel:
Panel:
Interview-day phrases
Shitsumon o mou ichido onegai dekimasu ka.
Asking for clarification is better than answering the wrong question.
