NAT-TEST Score Levels and Pass Marks Explained
Understand NAT-TEST 1Q-5Q pass marks, sectional minimums, test times, CEFR reference bands and how to read the score report before a retake.
NAT-TEST overall pass marks are 100 for 1Q, 90 for 2Q, 95 for 3Q, 90 for 4Q and 80 for 5Q, all out of 180. You must also reach each sectional minimum: 19/60 for separate sections or 38/120 for the combined 4Q-5Q Language Knowledge and Reading section.
The score system resembles JLPT, but acceptance is not automatic. Use the receiving school, employer or authority's written rule before choosing NAT-TEST as evidence.
Key takeaways

NAT-TEST levels 5Q to 1Q
| NAT-TEST level | Provider comparison | Broad stage |
|---|---|---|
| 5Q | JLPT N5 range | Very basic Japanese |
| 4Q | JLPT N4 range | Basic Japanese |
| 3Q | JLPT N3 range | Intermediate bridge |
| 2Q | JLPT N2 range | Upper-intermediate/advanced |
| 1Q | JLPT N1 range | Advanced |
The provider publishes indicative study hours, but they are not promises. A learner's language background, study quality and reading exposure can produce very different timelines.

Overall and sectional pass marks
1Q, 2Q and 3Q
| Level | Overall pass | Language Knowledge | Reading | Listening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1Q | 100/180 | 19/60 | 19/60 | 19/60 |
| 2Q | 90/180 | 19/60 | 19/60 | 19/60 |
| 3Q | 95/180 | 19/60 | 19/60 | 19/60 |
4Q and 5Q
| Level | Overall pass | Combined Language Knowledge/Reading | Listening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4Q | 90/180 | 38/120 | 19/60 |
| 5Q | 80/180 | 38/120 | 19/60 |
The provider states that candidates must satisfy the sectional pass marks and the overall pass mark. Do not interpret 100, 90, 95, 90 or 80 as the only condition.
Passing and failing examples
2Q pass at the boundary
- Language Knowledge: 30.
- Reading: 30.
- Listening: 30.
- Total: 90.
Every section reaches 19 and the total reaches 90, so the result passes.
2Q fail despite enough total
- Language Knowledge: 42.
- Reading: 35.
- Listening: 18.
- Total: 95.
Listening misses the 19-point sectional mark, so the result fails.
4Q pass
- Combined Language Knowledge/Reading: 60.
- Listening: 30.
- Total: 90.
Both section and total requirements are met.
5Q fail
- Combined section: 65.
- Listening: 14.
- Total: 79.
The total is below 80 and Listening below 19. Both problems must be fixed.
Aim above the boundaries. A one-point margin is vulnerable to test-day variation.
CEFR-equivalent reference levels
The official NAT-TEST CEFR table currently publishes:
| Level and passed total | CEFR-equivalent reference |
|---|---|
| 5Q 80+ | A1 |
| 4Q 90+ | A2 |
| 3Q 95-103 | A2 |
| 3Q 104+ | B1 |
| 2Q 90-111 | B1 |
| 2Q 112+ | B2 |
| 1Q 100-141 | B2 |
| 1Q 142+ | C1 |
The reference appears only for a passed result. It concerns listening and reading measured by NAT-TEST and does not directly assess speaking or writing.
The official page says CEFR-equivalent levels are planned for score reports and certificates, with the display start to be announced when preparations are complete. Check the current document format rather than assuming every issued report already shows the field.
Test times and question counts
| Level | Language Knowledge/Reading | Listening | Approximate questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1Q | 110 minutes | 55 minutes | 102 |
| 2Q | 105 minutes | 50 minutes | 107 |
| 3Q | 30-minute vocabulary + 70-minute grammar/reading | 40 minutes | 102 |
| 4Q | 25-minute vocabulary + 55-minute grammar/reading | 35 minutes | 85 |
| 5Q | 20-minute vocabulary + 40-minute grammar/reading | 30 minutes | 67 |
Listening time can vary slightly with recordings. Including breaks and administration, the full test-day visit can take roughly half a day.
The content covers vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. NAT-TEST does not directly score a spoken interview.
How to read the NAT-TEST score report
All test takers receive a detailed Score Report. It shows:
- Candidate result.
- Total score.
- Scores by section.
- Overall pass mark.
- Sectional pass marks.
- Detailed performance information.
Successful candidates also receive a photo-bearing Certificate of Proficiency. The organizer says reports and certificates are issued from its Tokyo head office with anti-forgery measures.
Review:
- Name and candidate information.
- Test date and level.
- Total score versus overall mark.
- Every section versus its minimum.
- Weakest skill for the next plan.
Do not post an unredacted certificate online. Contact the head office if forgery is suspected.
Result timing and local delivery
The provider says results are issued within three weeks. Local centers can use different collection, mail or portal processes.
Country-specific registration and contact guides are available for Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Vietnam.
If a school deadline is close, ask the center when the physical document will be available, not only when pass numbers are posted.
How to set a safe target
Use a margin above every threshold:
| Level | Official overall mark | Example working target |
|---|---|---|
| 1Q | 100 | 120+ with every section safely above 19 |
| 2Q | 90 | 110+ |
| 3Q | 95 | 110+ |
| 4Q | 90 | 105+ |
| 5Q | 80 | 95+ |
The working targets are study suggestions, not new official pass marks. Adjust them from timed performance.
When a CEFR reference matters, target the relevant score band and maintain section safety. For example, a 3Q B1 reference begins at 104 but still requires a valid pass.

Reading
Practice short, medium, long, integrated or thematic texts appropriate to the level. Train information retrieval and time checkpoints.
Listening
Practice tasks, key points, outlines, expressions, quick responses and integrated comprehension according to level. Add Japanese shadowing practice.

Acceptance before registration
NAT-TEST's provider aligns its levels with JLPT ranges, but the receiving organization decides acceptance.
For the comparison baseline, the official JLPT scoring page publishes JLPT's own pass marks and sectional rules. Similar numbers do not make the two certificates universally interchangeable.
Ask:
- Do you accept Japanese Language NAT-TEST?
- Which Q level and score are required?
- Is the result from my test center accepted?
- Which document must be submitted?
- How recent must the score be?

Common score mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Looking only at total | Every sectional minimum must also be met |
| Calling 2Q universally equal to N2 | Acceptance is recipient-specific |
| Treating CEFR as speaking proof | It covers measured listening and reading |
| Assuming all reports already display CEFR | Official display start is to be announced |
| Using one exact raw-question conversion | Read the official reported score |
| Ignoring local certificate timing | Ask the center about physical delivery |
Practice Japanese conversation free while preparing for a retake.
Final score checklist
- Confirm the correct Q level.
- Learn the overall mark.
- Learn every sectional minimum.
- Set working targets above the boundary.
- Use official item types and timing.
- Read total and sections separately.
- Check CEFR reference only after a valid pass.
- Confirm acceptance with the recipient.
- Protect score-document identifiers.
- Add direct speaking practice.
