BJT Scores and Levels Explained: J5 to J1+
Understand BJT scores from 0 to 800, the J5-to-J1+ levels, what 400 and 480 mean, and how to choose a realistic business Japanese target.
BJT reports a score from 0 to 800 and assigns one of six levels: J5, J4, J3, J2, J1 or J1+. J2 begins at 420, J1 at 530 and J1+ at 600. There is no universal pass or fail.
Two additional thresholds matter in specific Japanese immigration contexts: 400 and 480. They are not BJT level boundaries and should not be confused with a general JLPT conversion.
Key takeaways
- BJT scores range from 0 to 800.
- J5 is 0-199; J4 200-319; J3 320-419; J2 420-529; J1 530-599; J1+ 600-800.
- The exam has no single pass mark.
- Scores are scaled using item response theory rather than simple raw correct answers.
- BJT 400 and 480 are official-use thresholds in named immigration or employment-support contexts.
- The result measures business Japanese comprehension, not a directly observed live interview.
- Use the receiving employer, school or authority's written threshold as the target.

How BJT scoring works
BJT is a computer-based test of Japanese communication required in business settings. It contains 80 questions and takes about two hours. The three parts are listening, integrated listening-and-reading, and reading.
The result is not the number of correct answers. The organizer uses item response theory to process raw responses and account for question difficulty. The final score is placed on a 0-800 scale.
| Test part | Approximate time | Main processing demand |
|---|---|---|
| Listening comprehension | 45 minutes | Understand workplace speech, intent, relationships and context |
| Listening and reading comprehension | 30 minutes | Integrate visual or written information with audio |
| Reading comprehension | 30 minutes | Interpret business text, vocabulary, logic and situation |
Because this is a scaled score, two candidates with the same number of raw correct answers are not necessarily guaranteed the same reported score across different question sets. The score is designed to remain comparable when proficiency is unchanged.

BJT levels from J5 to J1+
| Level | Score range | Official broad interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| J1+ | 600-800 | Sufficient communication in any business situation |
| J1 | 530-599 | Appropriate communication across a wide range of business situations |
| J2 | 420-529 | Appropriate communication in a limited range of business situations |
| J3 | 320-419 | Some communication in a limited range of business situations |
| J4 | 200-319 | Minimal communication in a limited range of business situations |
| J5 | 0-199 | Virtually no business Japanese communication ability demonstrated |
J1+: 600-800
J1+ is the highest band. The level guide describes accurate understanding of business conversation, meetings, negotiations, phone calls and documents, along with appropriate language for relationships and situations.
It is still an exam inference. BJT does not record the candidate conducting a negotiation or delivering a presentation. Pair the score goal with business Japanese conversation practice, Japanese meeting phrases, and Japanese phone-call phrases.
J1: 530-599
J1 indicates appropriate communication in a wide range of business settings. A candidate may understand most workplace communication but still lose precision in specialized, rapid or politically sensitive situations.
This is a strong professional band, but employers can set their own requirement. A technical role, sales role and bilingual coordinator role do not need the same productive vocabulary.
J2: 420-529
J2 begins at 420 and covers appropriate communication in a limited range of business situations. The official 2024 result report shows J2 was the largest level group overall, illustrating that it is a common working range among test takers.
Do not confuse the J2 boundary with the immigration threshold at 400. A score of 400 is still J3 by the BJT level table, although it can have a separate meaning in an official points system.
J3: 320-419
J3 means some degree of communication in limited business settings. The learner may manage familiar routine information but struggle when the relationship, purpose or vocabulary changes.
At this stage, combine core grammar and reading with Japanese conversation at work, Japanese customer-service phrases, and Japanese small-talk topics.
J4: 200-319
J4 represents minimal business communication in limited situations. A learner may recognize predictable phrases or simple workplace information but lacks stable processing across the test.
Build a daily foundation with Japanese shadowing practice and a 30-minute Japanese study routine.
J5: 0-199
J5 is the lowest reported band. It does not mean a person knows no Japanese; it means the exam did not show enough business Japanese communication ability for J4.
Rebuild high-frequency vocabulary, basic sentence patterns, listening segmentation and kana or kanji recognition. The JLPT N5 guide can organize beginner content, although BJT remains a different business-focused assessment.
Why BJT 400 and 480 matter
The numbers 400 and 480 are frequently searched because Japanese official systems refer to them. They are not BJT level boundaries.
BJT 400
BJT 400 lies in the J3 band of 320-419. Japan's highly skilled foreign professional points table can award 10 points for BJT 400 or higher in the Japanese-language category, alongside the rule's treatment of JLPT N2.
This does not turn a 400 score into an N2 certificate for every employer or school. It means the named immigration points system recognizes the score for that category.
BJT 480
BJT 480 lies inside J2. The same highly skilled professional framework can award 15 points for 480 or higher. The BJT provider also cites 480 in the designated-activities employment-support route for eligible graduates of Japanese universities.
A threshold never guarantees status. The applicant must satisfy the full route, submit evidence and receive a decision from the authority.
Read Japanese level required to work in Japan, specified skilled worker Japanese requirements, and the current Immigration Services Agency guidance before acting.
BJT levels vs JLPT
BJT and JLPT measure overlapping Japanese knowledge but different intended use. JLPT has N5-N1 pass/fail levels and focuses on language knowledge, reading and listening. BJT uses one 0-800 scale and business situations.
| Question | BJT | JLPT |
|---|---|---|
| Result | 0-800 score plus J5-J1+ | Pass/fail at selected N5-N1 level |
| Context | Business communication | General Japanese proficiency |
| Frequency | Year-round CBT subject to seats | July and December |
| Speaking | Not directly tested | Not directly tested |
| Best use | Business benchmarking where accepted | Broad certificate recognition |
The BJT provider publishes research about the JLPT levels held by examinees, but correlation is not equivalence. Use BJT vs JLPT for work for the decision and Japanese tests other than JLPT for alternatives.
Reading your BJT score report
Your headline result includes the 0-800 score and J level. Treat the exact score as the primary measurement; the level is a convenient band.
If a score moves from 415 to 418, the level remains J3 but progress may still be real. If it moves from 419 to 420, the label changes to J2, but that one-point boundary does not suddenly transform workplace behavior.
Use three questions:
- What is the exact score?
- Which test-part skills caused difficulty?
- What threshold does the receiving organization actually use?
The official score report can be printed through the dedicated site. Protect report identifiers and personal data. For document use, verify whether the recipient accepts the printout or needs another verification step.
CAN-DO reports: useful but not direct proof
The BJT CAN-DO report connects levels with examinees' self-evaluations of workplace tasks such as appointments, explanations and listening. It can help employers and learners interpret what a band may look like.
However, those speaking statements come from survey self-assessment, not a scored speaking interview inside BJT. A J1 candidate still needs a separate interview, role-play or work sample when productive speaking is critical.

How to set a BJT target
Choose the target from the decision the score must support:
| Goal | Better target method |
|---|---|
| Internal progress | Next stable level plus section improvement |
| Job application | Employer's written minimum or a role-specific benchmark |
| Promotion | Company policy and productive communication evidence |
| Highly skilled points | Current official 400 or 480 rule plus full eligibility |
| Designated activities route | Current official 480 rule and route eligibility |
| General certificate | Compare BJT recognition with JLPT |
Add a margin above a hard threshold. Targeting exactly 400 or 480 leaves no buffer for test-day variation.
Candidates preparing for work should also rehearse Japanese job-interview self-introduction, Japanese conversation at work, and Japanese meeting phrases.
