JPT vs JLPT: Scores, Recognition and Test Dates
Compare JPT and JLPT scores, recognition, 2026 test dates, results and speaking limits to choose the right Japanese exam for your goal.
Choose JLPT when an application names an N-level or you need the most familiar international Japanese certificate. Choose JPT when the recipient accepts its 10-990 score and you value frequent test dates, fast results and progress measured on one continuous scale.
JPT and JLPT overlap in listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar, but they are not interchangeable. JLPT is a level-based qualification with pass rules. JPT is a communication-oriented listening-and-reading test that reports one score. Neither includes a live speaking interview.
Key takeaways
- JPT has 200 questions and reports listening, reading and total scores from 10 to 990.
- JLPT has five separate levels, N5 through N1, and reports a total from 0 to 180.
- JPT is normally held monthly in Japan; JLPT is held in July and December.
- JPT says results are normally available around two weeks after the test; JLPT timing is longer and varies by test location.
- JLPT level names are usually more portable internationally, but JPT is accepted for specific education, employment and official purposes.
- Provider reference points such as JPT 525 around JLPT N2 are useful for planning, not automatic equivalence.
- Neither exam tests the candidate speaking Japanese in real time.

This table does not tell you which certificate a specific organization will accept. The correct order is: identify the purpose, obtain the written requirement, then choose a test and date. Do not take an exam first and ask about recognition later.

Test format and skills
The standard JPT gives every candidate the same 200-question paper. Listening has 100 questions and reading has 100. Official material describes picture, response, conversation and explanation tasks on the listening side, followed by vocabulary, sentence, correction and passage work on the reading side.
This produces a broad score even when two candidates are at different stages. A beginner does not register for a separate "JPT N5" paper, and an advanced learner does not register for a "JPT N1" paper.
JLPT works differently. Candidates choose one level before registration. N5 and N4 test basic Japanese, N3 bridges basic and advanced content, and N2 and N1 require progressively stronger comprehension. The official timing also differs by level:
| JLPT level | Language knowledge and reading | Listening | Total testing time |
|---|---|---|---|
| N1 | 110 minutes | 55 minutes | 165 minutes |
| N2 | 105 minutes | 50 minutes | 155 minutes |
| N3 | 30 minutes vocabulary + 70 minutes grammar/reading | 40 minutes | 140 minutes |
| N4 | 25 minutes vocabulary + 55 minutes grammar/reading | 35 minutes | 115 minutes |
| N5 | 20 minutes vocabulary + 40 minutes grammar/reading | 30 minutes | 90 minutes |
Both tests reward vocabulary, grammar, reading speed and listening accuracy. JPT places everyone on one communication-oriented scale; JLPT asks whether a candidate clears the standard for one chosen level.

Scores, pass rules and comparisons
JPT listening and reading each score from 5 to 495. Their sum produces a total from 10 to 990 in five-point increments. The standard JPT does not impose one universal passing score. The receiving school, employer or procedure sets the useful target.
JLPT reports a total from 0 to 180 and applies both total and sectional pass marks. Current official pass marks are:
| JLPT level | Total pass mark | Section rule |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | 100/180 | At least 19/60 in each of three scoring sections |
| N2 | 90/180 | At least 19/60 in each of three scoring sections |
| N3 | 95/180 | At least 19/60 in each of three scoring sections |
| N4 | 90/180 | At least 38/120 for knowledge/reading and 19/60 for listening |
| N5 | 80/180 | At least 38/120 for knowledge/reading and 19/60 for listening |
A candidate fails JLPT if any sectional minimum is missed, even when the total score reaches the headline pass mark. That prevents a very strong reading performance from completely hiding a listening weakness.
The JPT provider publishes reference points around the JLPT ladder: 315 for N5, 375 for N4, 430 for N3, 525 for N2 and 660 for N1. These figures help learners choose study material. They do not mean "JPT 525 equals an N2 certificate" in every application.
The reason is structural. JPT uses one paper and one continuous scale, whereas JLPT uses different level papers and pass conditions. Even the JPT provider notes that people who passed the same JLPT level can spread across a wide JPT score range.
The safest wording is: JPT 525 is a provider reference point around N2, not a replacement for N2 unless the recipient says so.
CEFR references do not make the tests identical
Since the December 2025 JLPT, successful candidates can receive a CEFR reference on the score report. Official bands include N5 pass at A1, N4 pass at A2, and score-dependent references for N3, N2 and N1. For example, an N2 total of 90-111 receives B1 and 112 or higher receives B2.
JLPT explicitly says this CEFR reference covers linguistic knowledge and receptive activities. It does not assess production or interaction. Therefore a C1 reference on an N1 result does not claim that the holder demonstrated C1 speaking or writing during JLPT.
JPT is also mentioned in official Japanese proficiency lists at particular thresholds, including 315 and 370 in named education contexts. Those references are tied to the purpose and rule in which they appear. They are not permission to create a universal JPT-to-JLPT-to-CEFR conversion table.
Read Japanese language school requirements and Japanese university admission language requirements before relying on any score comparison.
Recognition for study, work and residence
JLPT is generally the more recognizable international label. Universities, employers, scholarship documents and job advertisements can state "JLPT N2" or "JLPT N1" without explaining a numerical scale. The test is administered in many countries through local partners, which makes the certificate familiar across markets.
JPT still has valid uses. Its provider publishes examples of schools and companies that use JPT. Japan's Immigration Services Agency lists JPT 315 or higher as one form of A1 evidence in the Japanese-language-education admission context and JPT 370 in its published A2 evidence list. Another official higher-education context includes JPT 525 among the referenced measures.
Those examples should be read narrowly. A score does not guarantee a visa, admission or job. An authority considers the current route and supporting documents, while a school or company can change its accepted tests.
Use this recognition checklist:
- Get the current requirement from the organization receiving the result.
- Confirm whether it names JPT, JLPT or either test.
- Check whether it requires a minimum score, a passed level, or an original certificate.
- Confirm how recent the result must be.
- Ask whether an online result is enough or an official score document is required.
- Keep a written answer if the public page is ambiguous.
For employment planning, compare the requirement with Japanese level required to work in Japan, business Japanese conversation practice, and BJT vs JLPT for business Japanese.
Test dates, registration and results
JPT's biggest scheduling advantage in Japan is frequency. The provider says it is normally held twelve times each year. Cities vary by round. Late-2026 Japan dates include 22 November in Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi, followed by 20 December in Tokyo and Osaka. The corresponding published application windows close before each test.
JLPT has two 2026 test dates: 5 July and 6 December. Not every overseas city offers both. Registration is not global: Japan candidates use the domestic route, while overseas candidates apply through the local host in their test city.
| Planning factor | JPT | JLPT |
|---|---|---|
| Late-2026 Japan frequency | Monthly rounds listed | 6 December round |
| Japan application route | Official JPT app | MyJLPT |
| Overseas route | Country or regional JPT host | Local JLPT host institution |
| Published result timing | About two weeks | Official timing varies by location and round |
| Certificate action | Result and score-certificate process through official route | Certificate of Result and Scores through official process |
If a deadline is close, JPT can be practical only when the recipient accepts it. A fast unacceptable result is useless. Conversely, waiting for JLPT may be worth it when the application explicitly requires N2 or N1.
Open the official schedule on the day you register. Do not rely on a blog screenshot for seats, payment, identification rules or deadlines. See JLPT test dates 2026 and JLPT December 2026 registration dates for additional planning context.
The speaking gap
Neither test asks you to hold an unscripted conversation. JPT uses listening and reading questions. JLPT tests language knowledge, reading and listening, and the official FAQ says there are no plans to add speaking or writing.
That matters because real goals involve production. A university student may need to answer a professor's follow-up question. A job candidate may need to explain experience politely. A resident may need to repair a misunderstanding at a clinic or city office.
A high receptive score helps, but it cannot prove these actions. Pair exam study with Japanese shadowing practice, how to practice speaking Japanese alone, and Japanese speaking practice with AI.
Start a free Japanese speaking session after each exam drill. Explain why the correct answer works, summarize the listening passage, and respond without looking at choices. This turns recognition into retrieval and speech.
Which test should you take?
Choose JLPT when:
- The application explicitly asks for N5, N4, N3, N2 or N1.
- You want the most familiar certificate across countries.
- Your goal has enough time for the July or December schedule.
- You are ready to commit to one target level and its pass rules.
Choose JPT when:
- The receiving organization explicitly accepts a JPT score.
- You need one continuous score to track progress.
- A frequent Japan test date better fits your deadline.
- You want a result that the provider says is normally available in about two weeks.
Consider another test when the actual route names it. JLPT vs JFT-Basic matters for specified-skilled-worker planning, while BJT business Japanese test guide is relevant when a role values business communication. The JLPT N5 guide is a better starting point for a beginner committed to the JLPT ladder.
If both tests are accepted, use a simple decision rule: pick the one whose official date, result timing, location and score format best match the deadline. Do not choose based only on which exam seems easier.
A combined preparation plan
The shared receptive foundation means preparation can overlap:
- Take an official sample for the test you will actually sit.
- Record vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening errors separately.
- Build a 30-minute daily Japanese routine.
- Train timed reading rather than translating every sentence.
- Shadow short listening clips, then retell them from memory.
- Complete full timed practice under the selected test's format.
- Speak about the same topic after every listening or reading block.
- Recheck registration and identification one week before the test.
JPT candidates should practice endurance across 200 questions and watch both section scores. JLPT candidates should target the selected level and protect every sectional minimum. In both cases, error analysis is more valuable than repeatedly taking random mock tests.
Practice Japanese conversation free three times per week and reuse words from the current exam unit. One session can focus on explanation, one on role-play and one on unexpected follow-up questions.
Final decision checklist
Before paying, answer these questions:
- What exact decision will this result support?
- Which test and threshold does the recipient accept in writing?
- Is the test date available in a reachable city?
- Will the result and certificate arrive before the deadline?
- Can you meet the ID, photo and payment rules?
- Does the organization need an original document or verification code?
- What will you do separately to improve speaking?
If you cannot answer the first two questions, wait before registering. If you can answer all seven, book the test and build the study plan backward from the date.

How we researched
We reviewed the official JPT test-content, scoring, JLPT-comparison, Japan schedule and certificate pages on 22 October 2026. We checked the official JLPT test-section, scoring, CEFR-reference, application, certificate and FAQ pages, plus Japanese Immigration Services Agency pages that name JPT thresholds in specific education contexts.
We treat a provider's comparison as guidance, not a binding equivalence. Recognition claims in this article are deliberately conditional because the receiving school, employer or authority controls acceptance.
