BJT Results and Retake Rules: What Happens After the Test

Learn when BJT results appear, how to print the Score Certificate, whether scores expire, the three-month retake rule and what to do after testing.

BJT gives you a paper Score Report immediately after the test. Three days later, a printable Score Certificate becomes available in Pearson VUE under View Score Reports. The certificate does not expire under the BJT FAQ.

If you completed the test, you must wait three months before retaking it. Missing the appointment is treated differently, but cancellation and fee rules still apply.

Key takeaways

  • Receive the paper Score Report when leaving the test center.
  • Access the Score Certificate online after three days.
  • The official certificate does not expire.
  • Receiving organizations can still require a recent score.
  • Completed attempts trigger a three-month retake wait.
  • An absence does not trigger that same three-month restriction.
  • A second account cannot be used to evade the retake rule.
  • Use the detailed score and level to build the next study plan.

BJT result timeline

Time What happens
End of the test Test center issues a paper Score Report
About three days later Score Certificate appears in Pearson VUE
Any later time Post-April-2017 candidates can sign in and print the certificate again
Three months after a completed attempt Candidate becomes eligible to retake

This speed is one advantage of BJT over fixed-date tests with long result windows. It can help with a job or application deadline, but only when the receiving organization accepts BJT and the score threshold is met.

Compare the result format with BJT score levels, the BJT business Japanese guide, and BJT vs JLPT.

Immediate paper Score Report

Pearson VUE says the test center issues a Score Report immediately after the test. Before leaving, check:

  • Candidate name.
  • Test date.
  • Reported score from 0 to 800.
  • Assigned level from J5 to J1+.
  • Whether the print is complete and readable.

If the name or document appears wrong, raise the issue with test-center staff or program support promptly. Do not write on the only copy if an employer needs a clean document.

Photograph or scan the paper for backup, then store the original securely. Redact candidate identifiers before showing it in a public forum.

Understand the score and level

BJT has no universal pass mark. Its six bands are:

Level Score range
J1+ 600-800
J1 530-599
J2 420-529
J3 320-419
J4 200-319
J5 0-199

Use the exact score, not only the label. A move from 421 to 510 remains J2 but represents a substantial change. A move from 419 to 420 changes the label but is only one score point.

Scores are scaled through item response theory rather than a simple total of correct answers. Do not try to convert one point into one question.

For official-use thresholds, see BJT 400 vs 480 immigration points. BJT 400 is J3 and 480 is J2 even though government contexts can recognize those exact numbers separately.

How to open and print the Score Certificate

Three days after the test:

  1. Sign in to the Pearson VUE account used for booking.
  2. Open View Score Reports.
  3. Select View beside the correct BJT appointment.
  4. Open the Score Certificate.
  5. Print it at the displayed scale.

The official BJT reissue page says post-April-2017 candidates can print through the dedicated site at any time and any number of times. It also says the certificate cannot be downloaded. Browser print dialogs may allow Save as PDF, but the authoritative record remains the Pearson view and printed certificate.

Recommended safeguards:

  • Use the original account rather than creating a new one.
  • Check that browser zoom is 100 percent when layout breaks.
  • Print all pages and verify no field is cut off.
  • Save a secure local backup if the browser offers a PDF print destination.
  • Never edit the score document.

If the account cannot display a result after the stated three days, contact Pearson VUE program support with the appointment information. Do not post login details or report identifiers publicly.

Does a BJT score expire?

The official BJT FAQ says the Score Certificate never expires. That answers the provider-validity question, not every recipient's recency policy.

An employer may ask for a score from the last two years. A university may require a current application document. An authority can change its evidence rules. Therefore ask:

  1. Do you accept BJT?
  2. What minimum score is required?
  3. Is there a maximum result age?
  4. Do you need the paper Score Report or online Score Certificate?
  5. Must verification come directly from the provider?

Read Japanese level required to work in Japan, Japanese university admission requirements, and Japanese tests other than JLPT.

The three-month retake rule

Once you sit BJT, you cannot take it again for three months. The official example is clear: test on April 1 and the next eligible date is July 1.

First attempt Earliest next attempt
1 April 1 July
15 June 15 September
30 November 28 February or 1 March depending on the booking system's date calculation; verify live eligibility

For month-end cases, do not calculate by assuming 90 days. Use the eligibility shown by Pearson VUE or confirm with support.

Creating another account is not a workaround. Pearson warns that a candidate found retaking through a different account within three months can have the result voided or be disqualified and have the account suspended.

The safe plan is to schedule the first attempt at least four months before a hard deadline. That leaves time to review the score, study and book again after eligibility returns.

Use the Pearson VUE registration guide for the booking steps.

Absence, cancellation and test-center problems

Pearson's BJT page says an absent candidate can take BJT again within three months. Absence does not equal a completed attempt.

However, the appointment fee can still be affected. The BJT FAQ says:

  • Credit-card candidates can cancel up to 24 hours before the start and receive a full refund.
  • Voucher candidates do not receive a cash refund; the test can be rescheduled within the voucher's validity and policy.
  • Date or center changes are available up to 24 hours before the appointment.

Always confirm the rule in the appointment email. If a natural disaster or center closure affects delivery, follow Pearson's instructions. On weekdays contact regional customer service; on weekends or holidays contact the center shown in the confirmation.

Do not mark yourself absent while a center-closure case is still being resolved, and do not purchase a duplicate appointment without support guidance.

What to do after your result

If the result meets the target

Verify the recipient's document requirement and submit the correct certificate. Continue speaking practice so the score is supported in interviews and work.

Review Japanese job-interview self-introduction, Japanese conversation at work, and business Japanese conversation practice.

If the result misses the target

Do not immediately repeat random mock tests. Use the three-month wait as a structured cycle:

Try a free Japanese speaking session at the start of that cycle and record which workplace situations still cause hesitation.

  1. Record the exact score and target gap.
  2. Review which test parts felt slow or uncertain.
  3. Classify errors by language knowledge, relationship, intent, inference or speed.
  4. Practice the weakest category for four weeks.
  5. Add timed integrated listening-reading drills.
  6. Run full simulations in weeks nine and ten.
  7. Book the retake only when eligible.

Use Japanese shadowing practice and a 30-minute Japanese study routine.

If the target was 400 or 480

Recheck the current official rule rather than assuming the threshold remains unchanged. Build margin above the line. A target of exactly 400 or 480 is fragile.

See BJT 400 vs 480 immigration points and consult a qualified professional for an actual immigration filing.

Score certificate problems

Problem Action
Result missing after three days Sign in to the original account, then contact Pearson VUE
Name mismatch Contact support; do not edit the document
Certificate cuts off when printed Set browser zoom or print scale to 100 percent
Duplicate accounts Ask Pearson VUE to merge or resolve them
Old post-April-2017 test Use View Score Reports and print again
Recipient rejects an old score Follow the recipient's recency policy and consider retesting

The BJT reissue page has separate legacy rules for 2016 and earlier tests. Those historical reissue windows have expired. This article's normal self-print workflow applies to tests taken after April 2017.

Speaking after a comprehension score

BJT does not directly observe a candidate conducting a meeting or answering an interview. The result can be strong evidence of comprehension but not proof of spontaneous production.

Use Japanese meeting phrases, Japanese phone-call phrases, and Japanese customer-service phrases.

Start a free business Japanese session and reproduce the kind of workplace situations that appeared difficult during the exam.

Final result checklist

  • Collect the paper Score Report before leaving.
  • Check name, date, score and level.
  • Sign in after three days.
  • Print the Score Certificate at full scale.
  • Store the paper and digital backup securely.
  • Ask the recipient about acceptance and recency.
  • Calculate the next eligible test date.
  • Do not create another account to evade the wait.
  • Diagnose weaknesses before retesting.
  • Add direct speaking practice.

Practice Japanese speaking free during the three-month improvement cycle.

How we researched

We checked the official Pearson VUE BJT program page, BJT organizer FAQ, score-certificate reissue page, level guide and official result archive on 22 October 2026.

We distinguish provider certificate validity from a receiving organization's recency policy. Appointment, cancellation and closure terms should be rechecked in the candidate's live confirmation email.

FAQ

When do BJT results come out?
Pearson VUE issues a paper Score Report immediately after the BJT at the test center. Three days after the test, candidates can sign in to the Pearson online registration site, open View Score Reports and access the printable Score Certificate.
How long is a BJT score valid?
The official BJT FAQ says the Score Certificate does not expire. However, an employer, school or authority can still impose its own recency requirement, so candidates should ask the receiving organization whether an older result is acceptable for the intended application.
How soon can I retake BJT?
A candidate who actually sits BJT must wait three months before testing again. The official example says an April 1 test permits the next attempt on or after July 1. Taking the test through another account during the restricted period can void results and suspend the account.
Does missing a BJT appointment trigger the three-month wait?
Pearson's BJT page says a candidate who is absent on test day can take the test again within three months. That is different from completing an attempt. Any fee loss, voucher handling or new booking still follows the cancellation and appointment policies.
Can I download or reprint my BJT certificate?
For tests taken after April 2017, the official reissue page says candidates can sign in and print the score certificate any time and any number of times. The same page notes that the certificate itself cannot be downloaded, although browser printing may offer a PDF destination.
